I'm a liberal, but still...this pushes my buttons...

This is from an e-mail that my father sent me. I have debated about whether I should post it but I decided that what the heck, I can say what I want and no one else has to agree with me. Normally, I am pretty liberal. I'm a compassionate person, I do what I can to help people--in fact I've been told all my life that I'm "too nice." But this irks me.
I suppose it's because I grew up the daughter of an immigrant parent, one who came to this country LEGALLY, learned the language, and eventually became a citizen.

The e-mail is in italics, my comments are in regular font.

This certainly puts it in perspective!
Let's say I break into your house

A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials in ages!!!
It explains things better than all the baloney you hear on TV.

Her point:

Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country,
protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of
illegal immigration (actually, they aren't illegal immigrants; the word immigrant implies that you came here legally and they didn't ; the correct term is illegal alien).

Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might
make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay
indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.

Let's say I break into your house.
Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.

But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors. I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).

According to the protesters:
· You are Required to let me stay in your house
· You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan
· You are Required to Educate my kids
· You are Required to Provide other benefits to me and to my family
(my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working
and honest, except for that breaking in part).

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who
will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there.

It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and
I'm just trying to better myself.

I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did
break into your house.

And what a deal it is for me!!!
I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep,
and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold,
uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior.

Oh yeah, and I DEMAND that you to learn MY LANGUAGE!!! So you can
communicate with me.

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America...

Feel free to comment and put your 2 cents in!

I'm with you, you can't argue with flawed logic. I was horrified to know that one of my relatives called a radio station to do an on-air anti Mexican rant--comparing them to the terrorists of 911...there was no logic, but people called in to sgree with him.

Hi there, I'm glad I found your blog! :)
I have to agree with you, this analogy is ridiculous. I would hardly compare someone breaking into your home, like someone coming into the US illegally.

I will say that I do agree that we need to secure the borders; not all of the illegals are here for honest work. I lived in Arizona for several years. We had our car stolen by an illegal. He tried to take it back over the border so he could sell it in Mexico. We were lucky; our car was spotted and never made it over the border.
However, after talking with the policeman, he said, "We can't do anything. We send this guy back to Mexico and in 3 days I'll catch him trying to take another vehicle over the border. They know how to get through."
I have traveled through Mexico and there are some very sketchy places; I wouldn't choose to raise my children there, so I can understand why they want out.
This is just a difficult situation all around.
Thanks for sharing the email.

ok, apparently i didn't make myself clear...i DO agree with this e-mail. that was the whole point i made in the note at the beginning of the post. my dad is an immigrant, he came here LEGALLY from sweden in 1967. it irks me to no end that mexicans, in particular, think that they can just come over the border and then that since they made it, we have to give them welfare, help them find a job, and speak spanish. that's complete b.s. my dad had to learn to speak english before he could come here, why don't they think they have to? where the hell is this sense of entitlement coming from? don't get me wrong, i am liberal, i believe in social services and everything, but this is out of control. apply to get into this country, otherwise, expect to get kicked out. that's my philosophy.
